Mexico City, December 6, 2006. - These 8th and 9th December, DHL, the global market leader in international express and logistics, joins the effort to help disabled children through Teleton 2006. This time, DHL Express is participating with a donation in kind for 2 million 550 thousand pesos.

“For DHL it is very important to be in close contact and collaborate with the community, especially for those children we know shall shape a better country. Supporting children, particularly those who have a certain disability makes us feel proud; once more, nothing can stop DHL… but this time is to help”, said Luis Eraña, Commercial VP of DHL Express Mexico.

“With the expectations and security that we have when approaching DHL, we know that in this organization we can show the professional and human confidence that leads to a definite success. We are very pleased to count on their valuable participation, which will result on benefits for Mexico and our children”, said Iñigo Fernandez Gutierrez, Promotion Manager for Teleton.

DHL is aware that supporting the population with disabilities is fundamental on helping to determine their development as individuals and future professionals.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 53% of the world’s population has a disability in the motor system; 20% shows an intellectual disability; 18% has a disability of human communication or hearing; and 9% has visual disability or blindness.

It is important to identify that, besides the calculated amount of disabled people, and according to information provided by the WHO, for each person with a disability, there are two more persons involved, because such individual needs attention and care, requiring the family to participate in his or her activities. Therefore, the number of people involved indirectly due to the disability is 3,590,600 additional to the directly disabled.

Regarding the economical participation, the National Institute of Statistics, Geography and Informatics (INEGI, in Spanish) states that 5% of the disabled population and older than 21, are part of the economically active population in the country.

Total disabled population in Mexico (2000):
Total disabled people:1´795,000
Economically Active Population, with disability: 915,412
Amount of disabled people with an occupation. (this amount equals 2.31% of regular EAP):397,183
Amount of disabled people with professional education:31,035**
Amount of disabled people with professional education, and professional work:7,618

**Representing 3.4 % of the EAP (Economically Active Population) in this group.
